          Hilltop High School
The HeartBeets project at Hilltop High School engages teen mothers in nutrition-focused cooking classes designed to help them prepare delicious, affordable, and healthy meals for themselves and their children. During the 2011-2012 school year, HeartBeets will partner with 18 Reasons to offer these classes on a weekly basis. Our goal is to build a community of women strengthened and inspired by good food.

          Exiting Homelessness
HeartBeets has piloted a series of cooking classes both at San Francisco's Medical Respite and Sobering Center, where homeless and marginally housed people recover after being discharged from SFGH, and at 149 Mason Street, a GLIDE housing initiative for the chronically homeless. HeartBeets has worked to design a curriculum that offers targeted guidance in how to prepare healthy, affordable, and satisfying meals.

          Alemany Farm
The HeartBeets project at Alemany Farm connects residents of the Alemany public housing project with healthful activities at the adjacent Alemany Farm. The low-income residents are primarily African American, Latino, and Samoan -- all groups at high risk for obesity. Alemany's four-acre farm offers abundant opportunities to engage residents of all ages in activities that help to reduce their incidence of obesity and inspire healthier choices.
